UQ Forgan Smith Tower Level 4
Level four of the Forgan Smith Tower is the home of the Centre for Western Civilisation. We were asked to refurbish the floor which was all offices and one seminar room to make a welcoming informal student student lounge. We removed three offices from the central internal area to open up a space that accessed the natural light of the striking original steel framed windows. The circulation and seating spaces were defined with a transition from timber plank to carpet, and further enhanced with a new open cell timber grid cut into the existing curved ceiling bulkhead. More domestic organic globe lights replaced the previous florescent lighting, and sheer curtains were added to add a residential feel, give some privacy and benefit acoustics. Power and usb charging is built into the fixed bench seat backs which is used to prevent loose furniture from spilling into the defined walkways. Now called the Ramsay Centre, this is proving to be a very popular student lounge in the very heart of UQ campus.
